The proto-Proustian wisdom, details, studies, and wisecracks are all over the place, and make pretty much everything the “cat” says rather fascinating. I read the first book sosseki was bored, I have no idea why I went on to the second.

In I Am a Cata supercilious, feline narrator describes the lives of an assortment of middle-class Japanese people: One of the quirks of translation is that the word ‘I’ in the title refers to a word which in Japanese is reserved for nobility – such is the x of cats.
Their adventures in seeking status, finding love, creating art and working or not serve to help them define what “Japanese” means at the beginning of the 20th century.
