The narrator is a hunchbacked loser who takes a leave from work to write a book, but is blocked, but in his blockage writes cmopania book in the form of footnotes about authors or authors’ characters throughout history who either refused to write, or couldn’t write due to blockage, or who wrote but refused to reveal much of themselves, or who simply preferred silence or to remain non-entities, etc.

Anche i personaggi di commpania romanzi diventano emblematici come fautori della negazione partendo- ovviamente- da Melville e Howthorne e proseguendo con Musil e, soprattutto, Kafka.

Julio Ramon Ribeyro – a Peruvian writer, Walserian in his discretion, always writing as if on tiptoe to avoid running up against his sense of shame or running up against, because it might happen, Vargas Llosa–always harboured the suspicion, which turned into conviction, that there is a series of books which form part of the history of the No, though they may not exist.

Vila-Matas’s hunchbacked narrator shares with the reader his footnoted Bartlebyan thesis of the No, and when you read this book, you just might come away with re-definitions, new filters. These phantom books, invisible texts, are the ones that knock at our door one day and, when we go receive them, for what is often a trivial reason, they disappear; we open the door and they are no longer there, they have gone.

We just want to make that loss personal. To see what your friends thought of this book, please sign ccompania. Or, like Harry Potter, something that will bring you fame and untold riches.
