Note that this is a review of the first edition of Advanced Perl Programming. That does mean, though, that this is one of the best introductions to symbolic references that you’ll find, since few other Perl programmers discuss them.

I bought it primarily for the chapters on XS programming, since I was just starting to develop and help maintain code that built Perl interfaces for C libraries. This book will help you understand the motivation behind the design of perl. As you might have guessed from the publication date and subject matter of this book, it’s one I waited too long to read. You should go for the second edition of this though, because some aspects are slightly outdated like for example the topic on file handles.
